Fiennes
takes lead in $10m Luther biopic
UK actor Joseph Fiennes has signed up to play religious reformer Martin Luther in a $10m feature film biopic to be directed by Eric Till. Luther, the story of a simple monk challenging the political and religious leadership of his time will also feature Peter Ustinov, Bruno Ganz, Mathieu Carriere, Uwe Ochsenknecht, August Diehl, Jochen Horst and Benjamin Sadler. It begins shooting in February at original historical locations in Brandenburg, central Germany, Bavaria, Italy and the Czech Republic. The project reunites Canadian-born director Till with the Berlin-based NFP Neue Filmproduktion. They previously worked together two years ago on Bonhoeffer “ Agent Of Grace about the Second World War resistance figure and priest Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Luther is being produced by NFP in association with the US partner Aid Association for Lutherans, and the ARD network’s Degeto Film, with additional financing from the Federal German Film Board (FFA), Mitteldeutsche Medienfoerderung MDM and Filmboard Berlin-Brandenburg. "With this film, we are making our leap to the big screen", said executive producer Alexander Thies. "Our aim is to produce important historical stories for an international market with a focus on North America." |
Welt am Sonntag (German
Magazine) 06 Feb 2002
At the set in Munich: The American-German production "Luther" had been filmed on the area of the Bavaria-Filmstudio in the last two weeks. The Brite Joseph Fiennes ("Shakespeare in Love") plays the German reformator Martin Luther. 'WELT am SONNTAG'
(German Newspaper) met Fiennes in a short filming break - wearing a grey
hoodpullover over the cowl.
Welt am Sonntag: Mr. Fiennes, have you ever hold a bible in your hands before your role as Martin Luther? Joseph Fiennes:
Yes
of course! Even if I am undenominational I know the bible very well. Theology
isn't right a hobby for me but I always had a passion for spiritual things.
Welt am Sonntag: Wherefrom is the colossally ink stain on your right hand? Joseph Fiennes:
Oh,
we just filmed the scene in the Augustiano-abt where Luther fought with
the devil and threw an inkwell after him.
Welt am Sonntag: You are known from the costume-movie "Elizabeth" and as Shakespeare in love. Don't you think you are too much attractive for the rather rustic Martin Luther? Joseph Fiennes:
Oh,
I am playing Luther as he was a young man. In this time he still looked
good. And no way attractive, for the Luther scene as Franciscan munk I
defacto had to let them shave me a tonsure.
Welt am Sonntag: And so you had been on the way through the Munich nightlife? Joseph Fiennes:
I
had no choice. Last Sunday I was celebrating my 32nd birthday, I didn't
want to spend it in my hotel. Otherwise I didn't have much time for sightseeing.
Mein Driver fetched my early from the "Bayrischen Hof", then in the dark
we were driving back again from the Bavaria-area to the hotel.
Welt am Sonntag: So you didn't had time for a saunter over the "Viktualienmarkt" (famous historical market-place in Munich)? Joseph Fiennes:
Yes,
before filming started I had a few free days. Luckily, because I'am filming
in Germany for the first time. By the way, I had a quite wilde imagination
of Bavaria.
Welt am Sonntag: Did they come true? Joseph Fiennes:
To
tell the truth, it is more beautiful here than I imagined. The best: The
bavarian air. I's a pity, today we leave to film in Czecheslovensko again.
The dialouge was
lead by Antje Wewer.
WamS:
Man
WamS:
Und
so waren Sie dann im Münchner Nachtleben unterwegs?
Fiennes:

The shooting of yet another film set in the first half of the sixteenth century "Luther" is now under way in Germany. Richard has been busy writing songs for Luther (Joseph Fiennes) to play and sing. In life Martin Luther was a great and influential musician who may well have changed the course of western music along with his reformation of the church. Representing him musically is a task which is being handled "respectfully and with care!" (source:Richard Harvey web news http://www.richardharvey.net/news.html) |
