Nights (unabr.).
School Library Journal, Jan, 2003, by Barbara Wysocki 4 cassettes. approx. 4:06 hrs. Prod. by Chivers Children's Audio Books. Dist. by BBC Audiobooks America. 2002. ISBN 0-7540-5276-1 $32.95. Gr 6-10--Heathrow
Nights (Signature Hodder, 2000) become a way of life for Russell, when
he and two of his school chums head for London to avoid the consequences
of their minor misdeeds. Short on funds and without a place to stay, the
teens wind up at the airport. Author Jan Mark has interlaced a typical
bad-boys-learn-about-life story with a modern interpersonal analysis of
Shakespeare's Hamlet. The result is all introspective novel that explores
Russell's inner conflicts as he comes to terms with his father's death
and the appearance of a new stepfather. After both his friends are forced
to return home, Russell solos until his step-dad finds him. Their slightly
drunken discussion of Hamlet leads them to an improved relationship. Narrator
Jonathan Firth does a top-notch job of making even minor characters memorable,
especially laconic runaway Curt. Though the novel is short on action and
long on interior dialogue with lots of terms that may be unfamiliar to
American adolescents, the skillful use of Hamlet makes Heathrow Nights
worthy of inclusion in school libraries where the play is part of the curriculum.
Public libraries where Anglophiles congregate may also find it useful.--Barbara
Wysocki, Cora J. Belden Library. Rocky Hill, CT
Heathrow
Nights - Brief Article - Young Adult Review - Audiobook Review
Jan Mark. 2000. Read by Jonathan Firth. 4 tapes. 4 hrs. Sound Library, BBC Audiobooks America. 0-7540-5276-1. $39.95. Vinyl; plot, author, reader notes. JS Discussion
about Hamlet and the action and meaning of the play permeates a story that
starts when three boys get into trouble by creating a disturbance at a
school event. They are, as a consequence, not permitted to go on a school
trip, but they pack their bags anyhow--deceiving their parents--and go
to London. After misspending their limited funds, they get a feeling for
what it would mean to be homeless. The boys take refuge at Heathrow Airport,
where their baggage helps them blend with the crowd; they become reflective
and two return home. Russell, the main character, is found by his stepfather,
from whom he is estranged, and they have a heart-to-heart talk, all the
while "sharing a pint." Students who are studying the play may be intrigued
by how Hamlet relates to their lives. A little bad language at the beginning,
and the adult/teen session where drink is involved, may limit whole-class
use, but introspective teens will enjoy this. Firth gives a sympathetic
performance with his good quality. British-accented reading. Edna M. Boardman,
Bismark, ND

Few would dispute the claim of War and Peace to be regarded as the greatest novel in any language. This massive chronicle, to which Leo Tolstoy devoted five whole years, portrays family life during and after the Napoleonic War. Tolstoy’s faith in life and his piercing insight lend universality to a work which holds a mirror up to nature . “A complete picture of human life; a complete picture of the Russia of that day; a complete picture that is everything in which people place their happiness and their greatness, their grief and humiliation. That is War and Peace.” How to Purchase BBC products
